What stewardship means
Protection is the first day of our commitment to a piece of land, not the last. Stewardship is everything that comes after — the ongoing, hands-on care that keeps a conserved landscape healthy, intact, and true to the promise made when it was protected. Every easement we hold and every preserve we own carries a responsibility that lasts in perpetuity.
Monitoring, every year
We visit and assess the lands we protect on a regular cycle, documenting conditions and confirming that each property's conservation values — its habitat, water, soil, and working use — remain intact. Annual monitoring is how we catch changes early, maintain trust with landowners, and uphold the legal terms of every conservation easement.
Restoration and active care
Caring for land often means helping it thrive: restoring native habitat, managing invasive species, supporting healthy grazing and working operations, and building resilience to drought, fire, and a changing climate. We do this work in partnership with the people who know each property best.
A partnership with landowners
Most of the land we help protect stays in private ownership and, often, in production. Stewardship is a long relationship rather than a transaction — we stay in touch with landowners and their families across generations, offering guidance, answering questions, and standing behind an easement's terms if they are ever challenged.
Funded to last forever
"Forever" only works if it is paid for. Every easement and preserve we take on is backed by a dedicated stewardship endowment, so the resources to monitor, care for, and defend that land are secured for the long term. It is how we turn a permanent promise into a practical reality, year after year.
